Hey guys what's up? I'm absolutely new to the forum. Been popping them bottles for about 13 years now. Don't know much about the difference in amylnitrate and the rest. I usually stick to JJ, rush, or my favorite Amsterdam's platinum.
I live in New England. a guy I knew was down in a sex shop in Florida (I'll keep it anonymous unless specifically asked), and they had their own homebrew of poppers. I'm not sure what kind they were, how they were made or if they were a mix of different kinds. All I know is I've never had poppers like this before, and never have heard ANYONE talk about poppers doing this. Simply put you take a big whiff of them, and you would get the poppers high, and then it would start to come down but then all of a sudden you would get this second wave of poppers without taking another whiff.
Has anyone had anything like this before? Where you get two waves of rush from one whiff?
From the small amount of info I've read so far. It seems like one type of poppers you get an initial peak then come down, but another type it's more of a build up to the peak? Could it potentially be a mixture of these two?
Thanks!!

I've been using a blend for years. IMO, they are the way to go, and yes, the effects have two (or three) 'waves' was the peaks of the various nitrites interact with each other.
You get longevity of the weaker nitrites, plus the intensity of the higher nitrites; as one hands off to the other, you can feel it; sort of like switching gears.

Professor, what's your favorite blend and percentages?
Also, what are your thoughts about using a little n-propyl as a topper?
The Professor said on Mon, 4 Oct 2021 at 19:20...
I haven't had good luck with N-Propyl; it's way too much for my metabolism; if you are younger and in better shape it might be nice,

Thanks Prof.
Am I correct from the info on this site that n-propyl isn't as responsible for eye problems as iso-propyl?

@Mason:
The 'poppers maculopathy' thing is usually restricted to damage of the fovea (the center of vision). a circle of some color appears around the perimeter of the fovea. In more severe cases, the central fovea may appear blurry as compared to the rest of the visual field (like a smudge spot right in the middle). Even more severe cases will linger for perhaps 6 months or so, and the damage CAN be permanent.
This can happen with ALL alky nitrites, as the fovea reacts to alkyl nitrite chemically in the same way that it responds to light; you're getting screen burn-in, sort of.
The higher nitrites (N-propyl and above) are more suspect because they degrade into niTRATE more readily, and niTRATE is much more powerful than nitTRITE

Professor, I have another question about blends, so thank you for indulging me.
Is there any reason not to mix final yields of different nitrites together rather than mixing the alcohols together before synthesis? This is my naivete asking, so thank you again for indulging my often Elementary questions.

Thanks! What are some good blends? Any blends of just name brand poppers that are good?
The Professor said on Tue, 5 Oct 2021 at 16:54...
@Charlie; that would be a question you can answer with data logging your runs. I haven't done it that way
The Professor said on Tue, 5 Oct 2021 at 16:58...
@pops4tops;
As far as I know, the idea originated with a DIY maker named popchef on Reddit. Evidently the idea was stolen by an OTC seller named artisanal cleaners.
I can't speak to their blend quality, but they are an example of a company that makes alkyl nitrite blends.

Thank you Professor. Mixing yields together has been in the back of my mind for a while now! I wonder if there will be any difference mixing the same alcohols before vs mixing the nitrites...

@ The Professor is it artisanalcleaners.com? If so, I can speak for their stuff. It is top shelf brews. It keeps long time and it is so clean. I have tried all of their 6 varieties and each seems rather different. My favorite is the MsC's BitchBoy #3 Close second is Kaboom! and third would be Adonis. These three is really something and very complex. Their original blends were Mellow Yellow, AwesomeTwosome and Flamin Cock. Out of the three my favorite was AwesomeTwosome. Not as complex as their newer stuff but still better than anything I have ever tried locally and off the internets.

Yes, that's them; you'll hear reviews that run all over the map; that's not just limited to this vendor though; for just about every vendor out there, the reviews usually vary form 'does nothing' to 'the best ever'

Professor, is it possible to use tert-buytl as part of a blend with the wet method?
If it melts at near room temp, how to go about incorporating it with other alcohols? Will adding other alcohols prevent it from re-solidifying at -12C? If so, what would be the most tert that would be acceptable?
The Professor said on Tue, 5 Oct 2021 at 23:47...
I use tert-butyl as a top note. In a mix with other alcohols, it will stay liquid. I measure it out in grams, then heat just a bit and it melts.
You can make a run with 100% yert-of you want to; that would require manipulating the reaction vessel's pressurization, though.
I suggest getting control of the reaction before venturing into blends.

Thank you Professor.
Exactly my plan! Baby steps...one thing at a time. Of course, my mind is usually a mile down the road ahead of me.
Good to know about measuring tert. Will cross that bridge down the road.

@Charlie...the problem with mixing alcohols is that you'll never know if you've achieved anything close to a pure nitrite, determined mostly by odor and effects of a known standard. You will get much more variation and never know what variation is due to the mix itself or just a myriad of unknown impurities.
In short, you will never known exactly what butyl nitrite should smell like or any of the others.
I bought 95% n-butyl nitrite from Sigma Aldrich. It cost a lot but it was the first known "standard" that I had access to. As I have stated before, it didn't have much odor at first, but quickly made my blood pressure plunge, which felt horrible. I washed it in baking soda/water, dried it and then retried it right away. At that point, the effects were strong, heady, and fun and i didn't get the plunge in BP again. The odor became very strongly like sweet bananas and when left open in my room, my room acquired a VERY VERY pronounced odor of a recently deodorized LOCKER ROOM. It's obvious why one of the first brands was Locker Room. It's indicate of N-butyl nitrite.
I never got this odor...nothing like it with home brew.

TY Nitritespecialist for sharing your experiences. I definitely am not thinking I will achieve anything excellent, but just hopeful it is better than what I have been buying over the past several years.
Have you ever tried mixing final yields?
With your home brews, were you using all ACS-grade HCL, NaNO2, alcohol, MSs, etc.? I think I saw you were using ACS grade alcohol, but I can't remember about all the other things.
Nitritespecialist said on Wed, 6 Oct 2021 at 20:22...
@Charlie....I spent a lot on Sigma's SN and it didn't seem to be that much better. All my alcohols are TCI. I last used hardware store muriatic. I couldn't find any lasting correlation with anything, but at the end there, during my last brews, adding a 40% solution of SN to the acid/alcohol mixture seemed positive....longer lasting brews. If I resumed making, that's where I would begin - with that mixing strategy.

TY Specialist. I'm going to give it my best and hoping the stars align, but definitely not going into this thinking I will succeed. I do appreciate the info to bring my head out of the clouds and my body back down to earth. If anything, at least I tried and learned a heck of a lot. I didn't even know the difference between a nitrite and nitrate, or even what a mol, spinbar, erlenmeyer flask, MS, etc were just a couple weeks ago. My mind is blown and I have not been as interested in something in a long time.
Since the thread is already off the rails, I mind as well comment here that there seems to be some kind of shortage of good quality 3A sieves, 8-12 mesh. I ordered one of the only supposedly/actually in-stock, but still waiting to see if they actually come through. I wonder if it is has to do with the pandemic? Many of the premier brands seem to be OOS or very low ATM. #fingers crossed
Charlie said on Thu, 7 Oct 2021 at 06:07...
...Ironically, it's the high-quality 3A sieves that seem to be the hardest high-quality thing to source ATM. Maybe it just has to do with the general shortages of things these days. Seems like shortages are the new norm.
