I have had a long standing theory that the SN used to make poppers, using the liquid batch method, is CRITICAL to synthesizing consistently good nitrites, without the need to distill. If this is the case, then anyone making poppers in home labs for OTC sales, is going to be faced with this reagent quality issue, which if not resolved, will lead to poor quality and inconsistent poppers.
To prove my theory, I spent a great deal of money to get high purity SN from a very large chemical company. Basically, I spent 7 times more money than for a similar amount of FOOD grade SN from Duda. I have only made one 10ml brew of NAN thus far using as much care and precision as I could. This result seems very promising but more time is needed to further assess this brew and subsequent brews.
Odor: N-amyl nitrite.....very mild, slightly sweet, with NO bitter undertones, no camphor, no medicinal, no pine like, no floral odors. Nothing unpleasant.
Effects: Potent, strong ass relax, nice nipple sensitivity, libido increasing, noticeable increased heart rate. May have to take deeper whiffs straight from bottle to get the full effects. NO unpleasant flushing of the face. No headache. No stinging of nostrils. No caving of blood pressure. Effects wear off completely in a very short time, perhaps in 5 to 10 seconds.

I made a second NAN brew using a different method....one of three posted on Google via Chemprep.
It has a decided mild, sweet and fruity odor similar to Juicy Fruit, with a tad must, and today a bit of a "fragrance". Nothing remotely unpleasant or bitter
Effects are mildly pleasant. ZERO weird effects.
This is more confirmation that the quality of the SN matters immensely.

Good contribution. I suspected for a long time the the SN qualitity is essential for the quality of homebrews. That is also the reason that my brew has not turned out to be good.

@Happy2.....I had suspected for a long time too, especially since the literature stated that it's wasn't very difficult to make alkyl nitrites having at least 90% purity without distillation. And I agree 100%, that if the SN is impeccable and the alcohol is pure....it's relatively easy. In my last two preps I used car battery acid(34% sulfuric) and hardware store muriatic(30%HCl) and I got good results. So the acid doesn't seem to be the biggest issue.
The problem with food grade SN is that it doesn't require storage away from moisture or air(O2). Also it probably has anti-caking agent added. It also doesn't require periodic QC. It doesn't matter if the food grade sodium nitrite turns to NITRATE because both types are still food preservatives. So...there's no need for special handling/storage. What you receive in the mail may already have lots of O2 exposure, as well as moisture absorption.

@Nitritespecialist A like help finding your recipe and method?

@justChem there are 3 preparations listed on a single google site....Vogel's, Barrowcliff and one other.
I used two of those and got similar results.
I am going to use muriatic as it's easier/faster. It's essentially 8.8 grams one pentanol, 8.6 mls HCl 36-40%, which I upped to roughly 10-11 mls of 30% muriatic. 7 grams SN.....I used 10-15 mls DW for the SN. I mixed the alcohol and SN solution together under cold conditions and slowly dripped in the cold acid under moderate to high speed. If the SN is not from a large chemical maker with an intact factory seal, it probably won't give good results. It cannot be food grade IF you want a proper popper. Find a hobbyist supplier if you want the best SN. Shipping will be high.
