I have only tried the mentioned patent method twice...using one pentanol...so I made n-amyl nitrite. I washed with water first, then brine/baking soda. Got a very transparent yellow nitrite. Dried on MS4 several times. Stayed potent for 48 hours with use. The key is to be water and acid free.

@Jako...I wish too....I don't like making them...all the mess, time, expense and lots of variation over time.

But there's no reason any reputable chemist would help someone set up a USA based shop to make high quality poppers - not the isopropyl, isobutyl, butyl toxic crap. I could buy 95% Isobutyl nitrite right now from a large chemical company. It's not that expensive, but the stuff is toxic and makes my blood pressure cave, which feels like shit. I could also buy Isopentyl nitrite, which is similarly priced to IBN. But it's more unstable than n-amyl nitrite, which means it often smells terrible and it goes bad quickly even with stabilizers. N-amyl nitrite is VERY VERY expensive so I have never bought it.

@Santa...that forum was back before I realized that n-amyl nitrite is the best popper, lowest odor, most stability, least toxic effects and still lots of fun.

Isobutyl nitrite should smell very sweet and similar to chemical nail polish compounds....the base alcohol has a slight bitter/grapefruit scent, somewhat pungent. None of it is very pleasant smelling. N-butyl nitrite should smell like very sweet bananas, and when left open for a brief time in a room, it makes the room smell exactly like a locker room. The base alcohol is sweeter, still pungent, and more like exotic fruit than isobutyl its cousin. One pentanol(amyl alcohol) is very very mild in odor...a little sweet and musty, not pleasant but not unpleasant either. The nitrite is similar, but a bit more fruity. You'll get busted immediately if you bottle n-amyl/isoamyl nitrite for purpose of sale/distribution/human consumption. Hence, nobody in the USA wants to take the risk...It was smuggled from Lockerroom Marketing in BC, in 2004...those people got busted and Lockerroom got fined. There ya go!!!
